Forward Winter

As we get to that point in the winter where we’re forced to start crossing off days until the thaw will arrive, here are some great links you should check out while you stay warm by the hum of your computer’s hard drive.

Charge of the Goddess

Red Bull Cold Rush
What do you get when you combine the rush of the world’s best multi-discipline freeskiing with the rush of Red Bull? On February 8th to 9th at Red Mountain Resort you’ll get Red Bull Cold Rush. Not only will the athletes competing be judged by their peers and competitors in slopestyle and summit sessions, but the whole thing will be documented and posted online where consumers can be the judges as to who will go home with the Red Bull Cold Rush People’s Choice Award. Consumers can head to rip.tv starting on February 11th and not only vote, but also be entered into a contest for a free pair of skis signed by the winner. redbull.ca/coldrush

Bodog Battle Competition
Guitar versus guitar is not just hot on Xbox, it's also getting a big play in the real world. The Bodog Battle Competition is chock-full of celebrity judges and possible fame with a $1 million prize purse, making it a great way for up-and-coming bands to break into the Canadian music scene and beyond. Bodog is turning their National Finals, which take place during Canadian Music Week in March, into a reality TV series. What better way to spend the winter than inside a venue (or at home on your couch) watching some kick-ass Canadian bands rock-out. battle.bodoglife.ca

Twitter
We can already see the prevalence of mobile devices in social networking. With the introduction of Twitter and its “micro-blogging” capabilities, this phenomenon looks like it might give the ever popular Facebook a run for its money. Your “tweets”, or updates, are instantly uploaded to the Twitter site by SMS, instant message or other online applications for all your friends to experience. Want to lay low for a while? Twitter lets you stay hyper-connected or set quiet times. Twitterific. twitter.com

Shared
The environment is top of mind and brands are realizing that social responsibility could be a deal-breaker for purchase intent among young people. Canadian-based clothing line, Shared, recognizes this and sets its line of cool comfy basics apart from others by giving back. Fifty percent of Shared’s profits are donated back to various community charities based on each retailer’s choice. The homegrown clothing line has already garnered recognition from Teen Vogue and Nylon Magazine. It feels good to do something right. weshared.com

Shakedown
For the seventh year in April, Mont Saint-Sauveur will be transformed into a playground for thirty professional riders who will be competing in the biggest professional snowboard contest in Canada. The event is known for incorporating sponsors into spectacular obstacles (previous years have seen a McDonald’s restaurant built into the mountain where boarders were grinding rails built along its transparent roof). The sponsor village at the base of the activities draws many of the spectators in for autograph sessions and skateboard demos, along with 20,000 watts of sound pumping through the crowd. The fun doesn’t end on the hill, it rages on at the afterparties. shakedown.ca
