Youthography’s Top Picks for April, 2006

MSTRKRFT - The Looks - Last Gang Records
Another year, another Junos ceremony has come and gone. Youthography was in Halifax, where we saw all our favourite Canadian artists – from The Arcade Fire to Bedouin Soundclash. Let us take this moment to gush about the amazing Canadian talent that’s bursting on to the scene. Does a mega-event like the Junos (in Canadian standards) do that talent justice? Not usually on a mass-level, but grassroots marketing and exposure will ultimately trickle to rest of the masses. We’ll give you a jumpstart this month by introducing you to MSTRKRFT (pronounced Mastercraft), an indie rock duo using their street cred to promote very danceable and DJ beats

Jack White of The White Stripes
On Tuesday, April 18 Youtube was abuzz with a suspected “leak” of a new Coke commercial which debuted during the MTV Australia Video Music Awards and was later confirmed by the Coca Cola Company as an authentic corporate collaboration between Coke and The White Stripes/ Raconteurs frontman Jack White. Internet rumours swirled that White didn’t want to license a previous White Stripes song, and/or that Coke had asked White to write a new version of the 19 71 single “I’d like to buy the world a Coke.” Nonetheless, the ad is a stop motion delight of the “Pass it Forward” variety and we highly recommend you to check it out.

Purple Hills - D12 - Devils Night - Interscope
R.I.P Proof – the member of D12 and best friend of Eminem, immortalized in Marshall Mathers pseudo-biopic 8 Mile by actor Mekhi Phifer, was shot in Detroit after a argument over a pool game escalated to gunfire. Born Deshaun Holton, Proof worked to gain rap and hip hop cred for the city of Detroit and was responsible for organizing numerous underground hip hop battles which helped rappers like Em make it big. An extremely important contribution to hip hop, Proof is mourned by fans and the industry as another fatality of gun violence.
