Welcome to Playlist, Youthography’s monthly offering which features high rotation music that we think is important indicators of contemporary youth culture. We’ll have to admit that there isn’t much of a theme this issue. The only thing we can say is that the release schedules were a lot more active this last month with a few really interesting tracks and acts. If anything, we suggest that you go a little deeper this month: if you only read the headlines, this is the issue to click the links, all the way to the bottom, as this month was has DJ mixes, hip-hop hits, remakes, live performances and some tracks so new, there isn’t a video yet.

Due to t he timeliness of these articles, some of these links will expire quickly. We therefore recommend accessing them immediately before they disappear!

Youthography’s Top Picks for April 2007

The White Stripes - Icky Thump (Icky Thump, Warner)
The first single from their latest record. This hard-rockin’ Detroit duo brings a little prog-rock to their new single. Guitar nerds everywhere (and thanks to Guitar Hero 2, there are lots of them) are going to love imitating Jack’s power chords and almost randomly selected guitar riffs. The links here are for a behind the scenes studio video and a still image with the audio over top for your listening pleasure.Behind the scenes:

Thou Shalt Always Kill - Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip (Thou Shalt Always Kill, Lex Records)
This pair hails from London, via Essex. Not much we can say about this track except that if there is a more catchy song that offers random observations on culture, social behaviour and the traditions of popular music, we don’t know what it is. And the video is very amusing.

The Shadow - Attack in Black (Widows EP, Dine Alone Records)
You may remember them from Playlist in November but we’ve included them again because they are really getting a push right now. They have the same management as Alexisonfire and Bedouin Soundclash and their four song EP way bigger than expected. A full album is due in August and the rumour is that their first coast-to-coast headline tour could happen this Fall.
