Play List, Youthography’s monthly offering features high rotation music we think are important indicators of contemporary youth culture. At the end of each month look for our list of popular songs to give you a snapshot of this. “M” is for May, Music and Metal? Yep, this month we noticed a number of metal tunes on the musical front, from Tool’s number one single “Vicarious” to the hard rocking guitar-riffs of the aptly named Eagles of Death Metal and even Billy Talent. Lots to check out this month, so get it goin’!

Youthography’s Top Picks for May, 2006

Promiscuous – Nelly Furtado – Loose, Geffen/Universal
Who is this? Nelly Furtado, the folky Canadian songbird of 2003 has revamped her image and, with the help of mega-producer Timbaland, her sound too. Her single “Maneater” burned up the charts in Europe, and Canadians are pumping it to “Promiscuous,” a back-and-forth between Furtado and Timbaland that’s a mix of hip-hop, reggaeton and 80s dance pop. One thing’s for sure, Nelly looks hot and we love her representing on this month’s issue of Strut Magazine. As for her “Promiscuous” single, we want to dance to it all night long! Oh yeah, make sure to watch for the cameo by Justin Timberlake in
her video.

Steady as She Goes – The Raconteurs – Broken Boy Soldiers, V2 Records
The buzz is all about The Raconteurs right now. While taking suggestions for Play List, it’s all we could hear! Self-described as “a new band made up of old friends,” The Raconteurs consists of Jack White (The White Stripes), Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler (The Greenhornes). The band was ultimately created after the writing of their hit single “Steady as She Goes” in an attic. Their album Broken Boy Soldiers has debuted at number 10 on the Canadian charts and number 2 in the UK. The only Canadian tour date is Vancouver, but expect The Raconteurs to be popular all across the nation this summer.

The Time of Our Lives – Il Divo and Toni Braxton – The Official Song of the 2006 FIFA World Cup
Football hooligans rejoice, it’s almost World Cup time! We’re totally stoked for the matches, but we are utterly repulsed by the incredibly safe, soft-rock choice of Official World Cup song by vocal group Il Divo and Toni Braxton. In response to this underwhelming pick, we’ve noticed many “alternative” World Cup songs popping up online. In any case, music and football have had a long tradition and we enjoy listening to each participating country’s World Cup anthem and you should too! Il Divo and Toni Braxton perform at the Opening Ceremony of the FIFA World Cup on June 9 in
Munich, Germany.
